Question 1

What does fault code P0171 mean?

Accepted Answer

P0171 means your engine's Bank 1 air-fuel mixture is running too lean — there is more air than fuel reaching the combustion chamber. The engine management system has detected this through oxygen sensor readings and logged the fault. Common causes include a vacuum leak, faulty MAF sensor, low fuel pressure, blocked injectors, or a failing PCV valve.

Question 2

Can I drive with a P0171 fault code?

Accepted Answer

Short distances are possible but not advisable. A persistently lean mixture causes rough idling, misfires, and in sustained cases can damage catalytic converters and oxygen sensors. Get it diagnosed promptly to avoid a small fault becoming a costly repair.

Question 3

How much does P0171 diagnosis cost in East London?

Accepted Answer

MnF Motors charges from £59 for a full diagnostic session including smoke testing and live data analysis. The repair cost depends on the root cause identified. We quote before we touch anything — no surprises.

Question 4

Will replacing the MAF sensor fix P0171?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. A MAF sensor is one of five common causes of P0171. Replacing it without diagnosis is a gamble that often fails — the most frequent cause is actually a vacuum leak, which a smoke test will reveal in minutes. MnF Motors diagnoses first, so you only pay for the part that actually fixes the problem.

Question 5

How long does a P0171 diagnosis take at MnF Motors?

Accepted Answer

In most cases the diagnostic session takes 45–90 minutes. If the root cause is straightforward — such as a cracked vacuum hose — we can often repair on the same day. More involved repairs such as injector cleaning or fuel pressure work may require an additional booking.
