Question 1

What does fault code P0420 or P0430 actually mean?

Accepted Answer

P0420 and P0430 mean your catalytic converter is not cleaning exhaust gases efficiently enough. P0420 refers to Bank 1, P0430 to Bank 2 on V-engines. The ECU measures efficiency by comparing readings from the upstream and downstream oxygen sensors — when they look too similar, it triggers the fault. It does not automatically mean the cat needs replacing; misfires, faulty lambda sensors, and burning oil can all produce the same code.

Question 2

Will P0420 or P0430 cause an MOT failure in Harlow?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A stored P0420 or P0430 code will illuminate the engine management light, which is an automatic MOT failure at any DVSA-approved test station. Even if you clear the code before the test, the ECU readiness monitors must complete their drive cycle — arriving with incomplete monitors is also a failure. You need the root cause fixed, not just the light reset.

Question 3

How much does diagnosing a P0420 or P0430 fault cost in Harlow?

Accepted Answer

MnF Motors charges a transparent diagnostic fee to identify the true cause of your P0420 or P0430. This covers live data analysis across both oxygen sensors, exhaust back-pressure testing, and a misfire and oil-burning check — not just reading the code. Repair costs then depend on the root cause: a faulty lambda sensor is typically £80–£160 fitted; a replacement catalytic converter ranges from £200 to £600+ depending on vehicle. You'll always receive a written quote before any work begins.

Question 4

Can I drive my car with a P0420 or P0430 warning light on?

Accepted Answer

Technically, yes — P0420 and P0430 are not immediate breakdown codes and the car will still drive. However, your vehicle will fail its MOT, fuel economy may suffer, and if the underlying cause is a misfire or oil burning, driving on will cause progressively worse damage. We recommend booking a diagnosis promptly rather than leaving it.
