FAQ: My Check Engine Light Is On — What Does It Mean and Is It Safe to Drive?
Few things create quite as much anxiety behind the wheel as the appearance of a warning light on your dashboard — particularly when it’s the engine management light, sitting there quietly, refusing to explain itself.
The frustrating truth is that it could mean a hundred different things. The slightly reassuring truth is that most of them are not immediately catastrophic. Here is what you actually need to know.
❓ What does the engine management light actually indicate?
The engine management light — also called the check engine light or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) — is connected to your vehicle’s OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) system. This system continuously monitors a network of sensors throughout your engine, exhaust, fuel, and emissions systems.
When any of those sensors reports a reading outside of the expected parameters, the system logs a fault code and illuminates the warning light. The light itself doesn’t tell you what the fault is — it tells you that a fault has been logged and that you need to investigate further.
This is why a diagnostic check — where a specialist plugs into your vehicle’s OBD port and reads the stored fault codes — is always the necessary first step.
❓ Is it safe to keep driving with the engine management light on?
This depends entirely on how the light is behaving and whether you have any accompanying symptoms.
Solid, steady light with no other symptoms — In many cases this indicates a fault that is real but not immediately dangerous. Common causes include a faulty oxygen sensor, a loose or damaged fuel cap, a minor emissions fault, or a sensor reading out of range. The car may drive normally. You should still get it checked promptly, but it is not necessarily an emergency.
Flashing or blinking light — This is a different situation entirely. A flashing engine management light typically indicates an active engine misfire — meaning fuel is entering the cylinders but not combusting correctly. This can damage your catalytic converter rapidly if driving continues. Pull over when it is safe to do so and contact a mechanic. Do not continue driving until it has been diagnosed.
Light on with other symptoms — If the engine light is accompanied by unusual noises, loss of power, overheating, rough running, or unusual smells, treat it as urgent. Pull over safely and seek assistance.
❓ Can I just clear the fault code myself to turn the light off?
You can buy a basic OBD reader relatively cheaply and clear fault codes yourself. The light will go off. But — and this is important — clearing the code does not fix the underlying fault. The sensor that triggered the warning is still reporting the same problem. In most cases the light will return within a short period of driving, once the system runs its checks again.
More significantly, some faults that appear minor can mask developing problems that worsen over time. Clearing a code without addressing the cause is a short-term cosmetic fix, not a repair.
❓ What are the most common causes of the engine management light in UK cars?
While every vehicle and fault is different, the most frequently encountered causes include: faulty oxygen (lambda) sensors, failed or failing catalytic converters, fuel system issues including injector faults, ignition system problems such as failing coil packs or spark plugs, mass airflow sensor faults, and EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve issues. Emissions-related faults are particularly common on higher mileage diesel vehicles.
The only way to know for certain which applies to your vehicle is a proper diagnostic check.
❓ How much does a diagnostic check cost in London?
At MNF Motors, we offer electrical diagnostic checks from £29.99 — one of the most competitive rates in North London. A diagnostic check reads all stored fault codes from your vehicle’s systems, giving a clear starting point for any repair.
We’ll explain exactly what the codes mean in plain English, advise on what needs to be done, and provide a transparent quote before any work begins.
