Windscreen Replaced and Now Lane Assist Warning? Why ADAS Camera Calibration Is Not Optional
You’ve had your windscreen replaced — probably a straightforward job, sorted quickly, new glass fitted, and off you go. Then, a few miles down the road, a warning light appears on the dashboard. Lane assist unavailable. Forward collision system offline. Or simply an amber exclamation mark with no clear explanation.
This is one of the most common scenarios we deal with at MnF Motors, and after more than 25 years working on vehicles in Edmonton, we can tell you plainly: it is not a fault with the new windscreen itself. It is the result of skipping — or incorrectly performing — ADAS camera calibration. And it is not an optional extra. It is a safety-critical step that every technician handling a modern windscreen replacement should be carrying out.
What Is ADAS, and Why Does It Live on Your Windscreen?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It is the umbrella term for a suite of technologies designed to support safer driving — lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and more. On most modern vehicles, the primary sensor for these systems is a forward-facing camera, typically mounted directly to the windscreen or to a bracket attached to it, positioned just behind the rear-view mirror.
This placement makes sense optically — the camera needs a wide, unobstructed view of the road ahead. But it also means that any time the windscreen is removed and refitted, that camera moves. Even fractionally. Even by just one or two degrees. And at 70 mph on a motorway, one or two degrees of angular error translates into the system misidentifying where the lanes are, where other vehicles are, and when to intervene.
How Precise Does the Camera Position Need to Be?
Extremely precise. Manufacturers specify calibration tolerances measured in tenths of a degree. The camera does not simply need to point roughly forward — it needs to be aligned to a mathematically defined field of view that corresponds to specific targets, road markings, or GPS inputs depending on the calibration method. Without that alignment, the system is essentially guessing, and your safety-assist features either switch off entirely (triggering that warning light) or — worse — continue operating with incorrect data.
Why Do Some Garages Skip Calibration After a Windscreen Change?
Honest answer: because it adds time, requires specialist equipment, and many windscreen-only fitters — whether mobile or fixed — do not have access to proper ADAS calibration tools. The glass gets fitted correctly, the seal is good, the job looks finished. But the camera recalibration step either does not happen, or a basic diagnostic reset is performed that clears the warning light temporarily without actually recalibrating the system.
That temporary fix is perhaps the most dangerous outcome. The warning light disappears, the driver assumes everything is fine, and continues to rely on lane assist or autonomous emergency braking — systems that are now operating from a misaligned sensor. The issue only becomes apparent when those systems behave unexpectedly, or fail to respond when they should.
What Is the Difference Between Static and Dynamic Calibration?
There are two recognised calibration methods, and the correct one depends entirely on the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements:
- Static calibration is performed in a controlled workshop environment. The vehicle is positioned precisely in front of calibration target boards at manufacturer-specified distances. The diagnostic equipment communicates with the camera module, and alignment is verified against those targets.
- Dynamic calibration is performed by driving the vehicle at specific speeds on roads with clear lane markings, allowing the camera to self-learn its position using real-world data. This sounds simpler but requires particular driving conditions and a completed pre-drive checklist.
- Some vehicles require both methods in sequence. Skipping either step means calibration is incomplete.

Which Vehicles Are Most Commonly Affected?
Any vehicle fitted with a forward-facing windscreen-mounted camera is affected. That list now covers the vast majority of cars sold in the UK from approximately 2016 onwards, and many earlier models too. Commonly affected vehicles in our Edmonton workshop include:

This list is not exhaustive. If your car was manufactured after 2015 and has lane departure warnings, automatic emergency braking, or adaptive cruise control, assume it needs calibration after any windscreen work.
Does It Only Apply to Windscreen Replacements?
No. ADAS calibration may be required after a number of common repair and maintenance events, including:
- Suspension work, wheel alignment, or geometry adjustment
- Front-end collision repairs
- Replacement of the camera module or bracket
- Replacement of radar sensors (often located in the grille or bumper)
- Any work that alters the vehicle’s ride height

Is an Uncalibrated ADAS System a Legal or MOT Issue?
This is a question we hear regularly, and the answer is increasingly yes. The DVSA updated MOT inspection criteria in 2018 to include checks on mandatory electronic safety systems. If an ADAS-related warning light is illuminated at the time of an MOT Testing inspection, it can result in a failure — particularly where the system is classified as a primary safety feature rather than a convenience aid.
Beyond the MOT, there are insurance implications to consider. If you are involved in an accident and it is established that your ADAS system was disabled or uncalibrated — especially if the system was displaying a warning — an insurer may argue that the vehicle was not being maintained in a roadworthy condition.
