Question 1

Why is my dashboard completely dead and showing nothing?

Accepted Answer

A completely dead instrument cluster is most commonly caused by a blown fuse or failed relay in the cluster's power supply circuit. Other frequent causes are a faulty CAN bus connection, a corroded or loose earth, or a failed cluster module itself. On many modern cars the immobiliser is integrated into the cluster — so a dead dash can also cause a no-start condition.

Question 2

How much does instrument cluster diagnosis cost in Finchley?

Accepted Answer

MnF Motors charges a fixed diagnostic fee to identify the root cause of a dead instrument cluster. Supply and fuse faults are usually the quickest and cheapest to fix. CAN bus or cluster replacement work is quoted separately after diagnosis. Call 020 8803 1231 for an accurate quote for your specific vehicle.

Question 3

Can a dead dashboard stop my car from starting?

Accepted Answer

Yes. On a large number of modern vehicles — particularly Ford, Vauxhall, Renault and Volkswagen Group models — the instrument cluster houses the immobiliser control module. If the cluster loses power or fails completely, the ECU receives no immobiliser authorisation signal and the engine will crank but not fire, or will not crank at all.

Question 4

Is it worth repairing a dead instrument cluster, or should I just replace it?

Accepted Answer

MnF Motors always diagnoses before recommending replacement. A failed supply circuit or earth fault is a low-cost repair. Where the cluster module itself has failed, a quality remanufactured or second-hand cluster — coded to your car — is often significantly cheaper than a new dealer part and carries the same warranty on our work.

Question 5

How long does instrument cluster diagnosis take at MnF Motors?

Accepted Answer

Supply and fuse checks are completed within the same diagnostic session — typically 45–90 minutes. CAN bus tracing or cluster replacement work may require your car for a full day. MnF will always give you a clear timescale before work begins.
