Why Do My Brakes Squeal or Squeak?
This is by far the most common early warning sign. Most modern brake pads are fitted with a small metal wear indicator — a thin tab of steel that is deliberately designed to contact the disc once the pad material wears down to around 2–3mm. When that contact happens, you hear a high-pitched squealing or squeaking noise, typically when you first apply the brakes in the morning or during slow-speed manoeuvres.
Do not mistake this for general road noise or dismiss it as “the car just being noisy.” That sound is engineered to get your attention. Once you start hearing it consistently, you should book your car in for a brake inspection promptly. Continuing to drive on indicators alone — without replacing the pads — will eventually lead to metal-on-metal contact with the disc.
What Does Grinding Mean When I Brake?
Grinding is the stage beyond squealing. If you are hearing a harsh, grinding or growling sound when you apply the brakes, it almost certainly means the pad material has worn away entirely and the metal backing plate is now scraping directly against the brake disc. At this point, you are not just damaging your pads — you are scoring and damaging the disc itself, which is a considerably more expensive repair.

How Does the Brake Pedal Tell You Something Is Wrong?
What Causes a Soft or Spongy Brake Pedal?
A healthy brake pedal should feel firm and progressive — there should be clear resistance as soon as you begin to press it. If the pedal feels soft, spongy, or sinks further than usual before the brakes engage, this points to a hydraulic problem. The most common causes are air in the brake lines or degraded brake fluid that has absorbed moisture over time.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs water from the atmosphere. Over time, this lowers its boiling point significantly. Under hard braking, especially on long descents, the fluid can boil and create vapour bubbles in the lines — a phenomenon known as brake fade. A spongy pedal is a safety concern that warrants immediate inspection. It is not something to monitor and revisit later.
Why Does My Car Pull to One Side When I Brake?
If your car consistently pulls left or right when you apply the brakes, the most likely causes are uneven brake pad wear, a sticking brake calliper, or a collapsed brake hose on one side. When one side of the axle is generating more braking force than the other, the car will naturally veer in that direction.
This is not just an annoyance — it is a genuine safety hazard, particularly in emergency braking situations. Uneven braking combined with an evasive manoeuvre at speed can destabilise the vehicle entirely. Have it looked at without delay.

How Can I Check My Brake Pad Thickness Through the Wheel?
On many vehicles you can get a reasonable visual indication of pad thickness without removing the wheel. Look through the spokes of the alloy and you should be able to see the brake calliper and disc. The pad is sandwiched between the calliper and disc — ideally you want to see at least 4–5mm of pad material remaining. If it appears very thin — less than about 3mm — it is time for a replacement.
Be aware that the inner pad (the one facing the hub) wears at a different rate to the outer pad, and is much harder to assess visually. This is one reason professional inspection matters. What Do Scored or Grooved Brake Discs Look Like?
Brake discs develop a natural, very fine layer of surface rust when a car has been sitting — this is completely normal and clears itself within a few stops. What is not normal is deep grooves, heavy scoring, or significant pitting across the disc surface. These indicate either prolonged metal-on-metal contact from worn pads or corrosion damage.
Heavily scored discs must be replaced alongside the pads. Fitting new pads to a damaged disc reduces braking performance and means the new pads will wear unevenly and prematurely.
What Other Warning Signs Should Drivers Never Ignore?

Modern vehicles have an electronic brake pad wear sensor on at least one wheel. When the pad wears to its minimum thickness, this sensor completes a circuit and illuminates the brake warning light on your dashboard. If you see this light — which typically looks like a circle with an exclamation mark, or may spell out “BRAKE” — do not wait. The warning light means the system has confirmed insufficient pad material remains.

What Does It Mean If My Car Takes Longer to Stop Than Usual?
Increased stopping distance is one of the most dangerous signs of brake wear because it is subtle — it creeps up gradually and drivers often do not notice until they have a near-miss. This can result from worn pads, contaminated pads (from oil or brake fluid leaks), warped discs, or degraded brake fluid. Any one of these deserves professional attention promptly.
