Question 1

Why does my oil warning light come on at idle but go off when I rev the engine?

Accepted Answer

At idle the engine runs at its lowest speed, so the oil pump produces minimum pressure. If there is a problem — worn pump, low oil level, sludge blocking the pick-up, or wrong viscosity oil — pressure drops just enough to trigger the warning sensor. Revving the engine temporarily boosts pump output, which is why the light disappears. It is not safe to keep driving this way; the underlying cause must be fixed.

Question 2

How much does an oil service and pressure test cost in Wood Green?

Accepted Answer

At MnF Motors in Edmonton — just a short drive from Wood Green — an oil service and oil pressure test starts from £60. Final price depends on your vehicle's oil specification and whether any additional work is needed. We give you a written quote before starting.

Question 3

Is it safe to drive to a garage if my oil warning light is on?

Accepted Answer

No. If the oil warning light is on, stop the engine as soon as it is safe to do so and check the oil level. Driving with low or zero oil pressure can destroy an engine within minutes. Call MnF Motors on 020 8803 1231 for advice before moving the vehicle.

Question 4

Could the oil warning light be a faulty sensor rather than a real pressure problem?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a failed oil pressure sensor or sender unit can trigger the light even when pressure is actually fine. However, this must only be assumed after a mechanical pressure test with a gauge has confirmed pressure is within spec. Never assume it is a sensor fault without testing — the consequences of being wrong are catastrophic for your engine.
