Renault Clio & Captur 1.2 TCe Oil Consumption & White Smoke: The Known Fault and the Fix
If you own a Renault Clio or Captur powered by the 1.2 TCe engine and you have noticed your oil level dropping between services, a bluish-white haze from your exhaust, or an acrid burning smell after a run on the North Circular — you are not alone. This is one of the most widely reported issues with this engine family, and at MnF Motors we have been diagnosing and repairing it for years. This article explains exactly what is happening, why it happens, and what a proper fix looks like.
What Is the Renault 1.2 TCe Engine and Which Cars Are Affected?
The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine — known internally by Renault as the H5F — was introduced around 2012 and fitted to a wide range of popular models sold in the UK, including:
- Renault Clio IV (2012–2019)
- Renault Captur (2013–2019, first generation)
- Renault Mégane IV (some variants)
- Nissan Juke (1.2 DIG-T variant, same architecture)
The engine produces around 118 bhp in standard tune and was marketed as a modern, fuel-efficient unit well-suited to city and motorway driving in equal measure. On paper, it looked like an excellent choice. In the real world, a significant proportion of these engines have developed serious oil consumption problems — and in many cases, Renault’s own acceptable consumption figure of up to one litre per 1,000 miles does little to reassure the owners paying for it.
Why Does the Renault 1.2 TCe Burn So Much Oil?
Is the piston ring design the root cause?
The short answer: largely, yes. The 1.2 TCe uses a bore with a specific surface coating designed to reduce friction and improve fuel economy. The problem is that this coating, combined with the relatively narrow, low-tension piston rings fitted from the factory, creates conditions where the rings gradually lose their ability to maintain a proper gas-tight seal against the cylinder wall.
When the ring seal deteriorates, oil from the crankcase is drawn up past the rings into the combustion chamber during the intake stroke. It then burns along with the fuel-air mixture. From the outside, this manifests as:
- White or blue-white exhaust smoke, particularly on start-up or during hard acceleration
- Oil level dropping without any visible leak underneath the car
- A burning smell from the engine bay or exhaust
- Spark plug fouling, sometimes leading to misfires on one or more cylinders
- Catalytic converter damage over time, as oil contamination destroys the substrate
Do valve stem seals also play a role?
Yes, in some cases. The valve stem seals — small rubber seals that sit at the top of each valve guide — can harden and crack over time, especially if the engine has been run low on oil or subjected to high temperatures repeatedly. When they fail, oil seeps down the valve stems into the combustion chamber. This typically produces a puff of blue smoke on start-up that then clears, whereas worn piston rings tend to cause more sustained smoke under load. In practice, some engines present with both problems simultaneously.
How Serious Is This Fault? Should You Keep Driving?
What happens if you ignore oil consumption in the 1.2 TCe?
This is not a problem you can simply manage by topping up the oil and hoping for the best. Left unaddressed, excessive oil consumption in the 1.2 TCe leads to a cascade of secondary damage:
- Catalyst failure — burning oil destroys catalytic converters, and replacement is expensive.
- Spark plug failure — oil-fouled plugs cause misfires, rough running, and increased fuel consumption.
- Turbocharger damage — low oil levels and contaminated oil starve the turbo bearings.
- Engine seizure — if the oil level drops critically low between checks, bearing failure and seizure become a real risk.
