There’s a common assumption among car owners that if their vehicle seems to be running fine, it probably doesn’t need a service just yet. That thinking is understandable — but when it applies to an older car, it can be genuinely costly. New cars are engineered with tighter tolerances, fresher components, and manufacturer-backed extended service intervals sometimes stretching to 12,000 or even 18,000 miles. The MOT is a legal safety check, not a substitute for servicing. Many of the components most likely to fail on an older car are not directly checked during an MOT at all.
