What Does Brake Fluid Actually Do?
When you press the brake pedal, you’re not directly pushing a mechanical component. You’re applying force to a column of liquid — the brake fluid — which transmits that force through sealed steel and rubber lines to the brake callipers or wheel cylinders at each corner of the car. Because liquid is essentially incompressible, the pressure you apply at the pedal is faithfully delivered to the brakes.
This sounds simple, but the operating conditions are severe. Brake fluid has to withstand extreme temperatures generated during braking, resist corrosion in a system containing aluminium, steel and rubber components, and maintain consistent viscosity across a wide temperature range. That’s a demanding job for any fluid.
Why Does Brake Fluid Degrade Over Time?
The most important characteristic of brake fluid is its boiling point. Fresh DOT 4 fluid, for example, has a dry boiling point of around 230°C. That headroom matters — because if fluid reaches its boiling point inside the brake lines, it turns to vapour. Unlike liquid, vapour is compressible. The pedal suddenly feels soft and spongy, and in a worst-case scenario, pressing harder simply compresses the gas rather than applying more braking force. This is known as vapour lock, and it is a genuine safety hazard.
The reason boiling point drops so significantly is that brake fluid is hygroscopic — it naturally absorbs moisture from the atmosphere, even through the microscopic pores in rubber hoses. After just two years of use, a typical brake fluid sample can contain 2–3% water by volume. That might sound insignificant, but it’s enough to reduce the boiling point by as much as 40–50°C, dramatically narrowing the safety margin.
Moisture contamination also accelerates internal corrosion. The cylinders, callipers and ABS modulator contain precision-machined bores and pistons that are highly sensitive to rust. How Can You Tell If Your Brake Fluid Needs Changing?
Is the colour of brake fluid a reliable guide?
Not really. Many drivers assume that dark or discoloured fluid is automatically bad and clear fluid is fine. Colour gives a rough indication of age, but it is not a reliable proxy for moisture content or boiling point. Some additives darken quickly without the fluid being compromised; other fluids can appear light while carrying significant moisture contamination.
A proper assessment requires a calibrated refractometer or electronic boiling-point tester. These tools give a precise, objective reading of moisture content and remaining boiling-point margin. When our mechanics check brake fluid, this is the method used — not guesswork based on colour.
What are the warning signs that brake fluid has deteriorated?
There are a few symptoms that can point to compromised brake fluid, although some overlap with other brake system issues:
- Spongy or soft brake pedal — particularly after heavy or repeated braking, such as on a motorway descent.
- Pedal gradually sinking to the floor — can indicate fluid contamination or internal seal wear, both exacerbated by moisture.

When Should Brake Fluid Be Changed?
The near-universal industry recommendation — backed by most vehicle manufacturers including Volkswagen Group, Ford and Toyota — is to change brake fluid every two years, irrespective of mileage. Because the degradation mechanism is moisture absorption over time, a car that covers only 5,000 miles a year needs its brake fluid changed just as much as one doing 20,000.
Some manufacturers specify a mileage interval alongside the time interval — for example, 30,000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. Always check your vehicle handbook, but in practice the two-year mark is the most commonly applicable trigger.
Brake fluid should also be changed whenever the brake system is opened for component replacement — fitting new callipers, replacing brake hoses or rebuilding the master cylinder all introduce the possibility of air and moisture entering the system. A full bleed and fluid refresh is the proper way to close out any such job.

What Type of Brake Fluid Does Your Car Need?
Most modern cars use either DOT 4 or DOT 4+ (also labelled Super DOT 4), though some older vehicles still use DOT 3. A smaller number of performance and sports cars use DOT 5.1, which has a higher dry boiling point. The spec is listed in your vehicle handbook and is usually marked on the brake fluid reservoir cap.
It’s important to use the correct specification. DOT 3, 4 and 5.1 are glycol-based and compatible with each other in an emergency, though mixing grades dilutes the performance of the higher-spec fluid. DOT 5, by contrast, is silicone-based and not compatible with glycol fluids — mixing them causes serious damage to seals throughout the hydraulic system.
