How to Prepare Your Car for a Long Motorway Journey

A long motorway run puts your car through its paces in a way that everyday stop-start city driving simply doesn’t. Sustained high speeds, constant engine load and extended braking demands all expose weaknesses that might otherwise go unnoticed on a short school run or commute. The good news is that most motorway breakdowns are entirely preventable — and a thorough pre-trip inspection is all it takes.

Over the past 25-plus years, our mechanics at MnF Motors have seen the same avoidable issues come through our doors time and again — flat tyres, overheated engines, low brake fluid and dead batteries among them. This guide gives you the checks that actually matter, explained plainly and honestly.

Why Does a Motorway Journey Put Extra Strain on Your Car?

On city roads your engine rarely sustains more than 2,500–3,000 RPM for longer than a few seconds. On a motorway, you might hold 70 mph — and the engine speeds that go with it — for an hour or more without pause. This places continuous demands on your cooling system, engine oil, tyres and braking components that are simply not replicated in urban driving.

Heat builds up. Worn components that were “getting by” on local roads can fail decisively at motorway pace. Catching these issues in advance — rather than on the hard shoulder of the M1 — is the whole point of a proper pre-trip check.

What Should You Check Before a Long Motorway Drive?

Are Your Tyres Safe and Correctly Inflated?

Tyres are your only contact with the road, and they matter enormously at motorway speeds. Check four things: tread depth, tyre pressure, sidewall condition and that the spare (if you have one) is usable.

  • Tread depth: The legal minimum in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. For a long motorway trip, we’d advise not travelling if you’re below 2mm — wet stopping distances increase dramatically as tread wears.
  • Tyre pressure: Under-inflated tyres generate more heat through friction, which can cause a blowout. Check your handbook or the sticker inside your driver’s door. Always check pressures when the tyres are cold.
  • Sidewall damage: Look for bulges, cuts or cracking. A bulge on the sidewall is a blowout waiting to happen — do not travel on a tyre in this condition.

Is Your Engine Oil at the Right Level?

Engine oil lubricates and cools internal components. Low oil is one of the fastest routes to engine damage — and at sustained motorway speeds, the consequences are severe. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully and check the level. It should sit between the minimum and maximum markers.

Also note the oil’s colour. Black, gritty oil that’s overdue for a change will not protect your engine as well as fresh oil. If you’re near your service interval, getting an oil and filter change before a long trip is a straightforward and genuinely worthwhile investment. Severe internal wear — up to and including the need for a full Engine Rebuild — is the costly alternative when low or degraded oil is ignored over time.

Are All Your Fluid Levels Correct?

Beyond engine oil, check the following under the bonnet:

  • Coolant: Your engine cooling system works hardest on a long run. The coolant reservoir should be between the min and max markers. Never open the cap on a hot engine.
  • Brake fluid: Low brake fluid can indicate worn brake pads or a potential leak — both need investigating before a motorway trip. The reservoir is usually visible near the back of the engine bay on the driver’s side.
  • Power steering fluid: If applicable to your vehicle. Low levels can cause steering to become heavy or unpredictable.
  • Windscreen washer fluid: It sounds minor, but poor visibility caused by a smeared screen is a real hazard. Fill the reservoir and make sure your washer jets are working properly.

How Are Your Brakes Performing?

Motorway driving involves sustained higher speeds and occasional hard braking — particularly when traffic suddenly slows. If your brakes have been pulling to one side, squealing, grinding or feeling spongy, do not dismiss these as minor niggles. Have them inspected before you travel.

Is Your Battery in Good Health?

Battery failure is consistently one of the most common causes of breakdowns on UK roads. If your battery is more than three years old, or if you’ve noticed any sluggishness when starting the engine, it’s well worth having it tested. A battery that struggles on a cold morning in your driveway is unlikely to cope well with a long drive followed by a motorway service station stop.

Are Your Lights All Working Correctly?

Walk around the vehicle and check all lights — headlights (dipped and main beam), rear lights, brake lights, indicators and fog lights if fitted. A blown bulb might seem trivial, but it’s a legal requirement and a genuine safety issue in poor visibility or at night.
